Digpen organised a one day web conference at The Eden Project on Saturday 23 March which was sponsored by Blackberry and FreeAgent. FreeAgent gave away jelly beans in their brand colours, which looked pretty cool and were very tasty too!
The talks covered a wide range of subjects from all sorts of professionals. One I was specifically interested in was from the developer behind the Moby Dick Big Read website which is powered by WordPress. However, he mentioned that he wouldn’t use WordPress again in the future. All of the talks have been recorded and will be available on Digpen’s website soon. I can strongly recommend keeping an eye out for them.
The talk about ‘The Evolution of Google’ for example, was very interesting as it was like a history lesson in SEO. I gained a couple of new tips for good SEO. One of them is the importance of content. You can make some mistakes SEO wise, but if you have good, unique content, Google doesn’t mind. Furthermore Iteracy, a web development agency in Lostwithiel that started in 2007, shared where their website visitors came from and how much they were worth (around 10% from web and 80% from referrals).
I also got a taster of what it will be like to develop for the new Blackberry 10 OS. You can for example in 70% of the cases take an Android App and convert it into a Blackberry 10 App with no problems. At the end of the day there was a talk by the Little Whale Studio about maintaining creative passion, which I think will be of interest from a designers point of view. Last but not least, sponsor FreeAgent gave away free very comfy t-shirts, pens, notebooks and a three month trial of their program.
Thanks to everyone involved, it was a great and insightful day.
